I-The Patriots
"Putting it simply, the Patriots rule this country".
In this game, there are many references to Patriots or the La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo but we only find out who
they are near the end of the Plant chapter. President Johnson reveals that they are a group who control the military, the
economy, etc, etc... . He says every key decision is made by a group of 12 men known as the Wisemen's Committee. Now, a commonly
made mistake is to assume that these 12 men are the Patriots. I can't emphasize enough on the fact that they are
only a portion of the organisation, they do not represent the whole. Even the President does not know their identity. So, in short , we learn that some kind of mysterious organisation controls the
country, the elections, everything and that they exist sine the formation of the United States.
That being said, I bring your attention to another important
statement made at the very end of the game: Otacon's. He states that the 12 men on the list (the wisemen's committee) are
in Manhattan but that they died 100 years ago. I remind you one last time that this does not mean that the whole organisation
is dead, only the 12 names on the list. I will come back to this list latter...
II-The Big Shell and Arsenal Gear
In the beginning of the Plant Chapter, the Big Shell
is presented to the player as an Environmental Cleanup facility that was set up following the sinking by terrorists of a tanker
20 miles of the coast of Manhattan 2 years ago. Now, wait a minute: the Colonel is referring to that tanker sunk by Ocelot?
But it wasnt transporting oil, it was transporting Metal Gear RAY, wasnt it?
It is later revealed by Johnson that the Big Shell
is in fact camouflage for the new Metal Gear project: ARSENAL. He informs new that this new Metal Gear is much more than a
weapon: it has full access to the militarys tactical network and other strategic systems, making it the ultimate fortress,
a place to house the expensive GW system, and to control the whole country from. It is guarded by mass-produced RAY units.
Emma then reveals that the GW system is a program used to filter information, to decide what the public will know and what
it wont. She affirms that the system still lacks the necessary factors for judging information,
that they were planning a major experiment in the next few days....
III-The S3 plan
Ocelot leaked to Solidus that the S3-Solid Snake Simulation-Plan was the VR training protocol used to shape a rookie
solider in the image of Solid Snake. He reveals after that the VR was not "The meat of the project", that the S3 kernel was
the entire Big Shell incident. He explains how Raiden and Solidus were chosen because their relationship resembles the one
between Snake and Big Boss, how Fortune was protected by secret technology developped by the Patriots, etc, etc in order to
recreate Shadow Moses because "given the right situation, the right story, anybody can be shaped into Solid Snake". After
the end of the exercise, Ocelot has enough data to create a program to emulate Snake...
So you think it's over...Think again. So many people stop there the reasonning , don't listen to the end cutscenes and
CODEC talks.. In one of them, you learn that S3 is not Solid Snake Simulation but Selection for Societal Sanity.
What does tha mean? It means, according to the entity I'll refer to as Rose that the S3 is a program to filter analyze
situations and take decisions accordingly; all in the goal of controlling the public. The final test for the S3 plan was the
Big Shell incident: "What you've just experienced was the fianl test of it's effectivness"-A.I Campbell
To summarize, the Big Shell was scripted, as described by Ocelot, but as a test for the A.I. to take actions accordingly
to extreme circumstances...
IV-Rose, the Colonel and the AI deal
In Arsenal Gear, some weird transmissions from the colonel are observed by Raiden: "The colonel's last transmission
was...weird"
Otacon retraces the signal and finds out that the messages came from inside Arsenal. What does it mean? "I
think it means you've been talking to an AI" "It probably wasn't GW per se, GW was more likely stimulating (...)
in the dormant part of your brain via signal manipulation of your own nanomachines...".
So that means that the Colonel doesn't exist, that the mission orders came from Raiden's head... Otacon explans
the weird transmissions by the virus's, or wormcluster, begining of acting on GW.
This would all be ok it it were not for one thing: before the fight with Solidus, Raiden recieves transmissions from
the Colonel and Rose..."But the AI was destroyed!" In "The document of MGS2", it is stated that these transmissions originate
from another AI, called JFK...There is, however, a major differenc between them and the messages Raiden got throughout the
game: in these transmissions, the Colonel talks as a Patriot, he uses "we" when talking about them...Is he a member of the
12; if they are not dead...is he an unknown member, or is he the wisemen's comitte "spokesman" contained in this new AI? No
answer is provided in the game, so it up to the player to draw his conclusions..
V-The List, the Committe, the 100 years
Are the members of the Wisemen's Committee all dead since a century? The information on the disc apparently says so,
if we believe Otacon. But if so, who rules the country?
One possibility is that the remaining Patriots control the US, or that they somehow encoded the last Wisemen in an AI.
Another possibility is that the list of names is not of the Wisemen...that these are fake identities...but if so, why
would they try to censor these identities? Perhaps these names are not dead...or perhaps not since 100 years...
It is also possible, and this is one of my theories, that the names are these or a very influent committe...maybe they
have been replaced since then but their identities must not be known because of something particular they did...
